Mr. Eldredge further noted that based on prior approval by the Membership, members still have the ability to contribute to the Chiquita Lock fund up to the amount of $2,025. Previous approvals would require the GPICA to match this amount.
Sue Dahod then gave a brief update on the Chiquita Lock lawsuit. There is expectation that there will be a ruling toward the end of May, however the administrative judge is still reviewing the case and has yet to make a final ruling.
A motion was made to accept the April Membership meeting minutes. It was seconded and approved without comment.
Sue Dahod spoke to the Membership about petitions available to be signed for the Rights To Clean Water. It is a petition to place a Constitutional Amendment to the preamble of the Florida Constitution on the ballot for 2026. Petitions were available at the meeting to be signed and only require that signers be a resident of Florida.
President Swisher-Hicks announced the following community events.
*The GPICA will hold its Adopt-A-Road cleanup along Stringfellow Road ( approximately 2 miles) on June 5.
President Swisher-Hicks then introduced James Evans, Chief Executive Officer of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF). Mr. Evan’s presentation was entitled “Fight to Save Captiva and Environmental Updates.”
