The featured speakers during the Oct. 5, 2021 meeting of the GPICA were Randy Cerchie, Director of the Lee County Department of Transportation, and Rob Price, Deputy Director of Lee DOT. Among the topics they discussed were:
- Four alternative intersection designs for the four-way stop at Stringfellow and Pine Island Road
- The effects that the development of the new Publix shopping plaza (Calusa Cay) and the Orchid Cove townhomes will have on traffic
- Overall traffic volume on the Island
- Options for lessening traffic through Matlacha, including a shared use path study currently being conducted by the Florida DOT.
Other items on the agenda included updates about:
- Palmetto Berry harvesting in the Flatwoods Preserve
- Research on development orders approved for the Island
- A hearing before the Lee County Hearing Examiner about the variance requested for a liquor store in the new Publix plaza
- The latest trends in Covid-19 numbers from the Pine Island Pandemic Task Force
